And, as part of Design Los Angeles' 2006 Design Challenge, GM's 5350 Industrial Concepts studio is showing off a fun, futuristic-looking concept vehicle.Pontiac Pontiac's product resurgence zooms forward with the introduction of the 2007 Solstice GXP, the performance version of its popular Solstice roadster. Solstice GXP features GM's all-new Ecotec 2.0-liter turbo with direct injection, the most powerful production engine in the Ecotec family. It kicks a V-6's worth of power out of a four-cylinder engine, an estimated 260 horsepower (194 kW) and 353 Nm of torque. The Solstice GXP will feature GM's StabiliTrak four-channel electronic stability control system and will debut on the American market in the summer. Chevrolet The all-new 2007 Suburban is Chevy's flagship SUV and is built on GM's brand-new full-size SUV platform, which combines advanced fuel-saving technologies like Active Fuel Management(TM) displacement on demand technology and aerodynamic enhancements to provide best-in-class fuel economy. The 2007 Suburban, which will go on sale in the US in the second quarter of 2006, is capable of hauling more passengers and cargo than any other vehicle in the segment. Suburban also features a 360-degree safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technology. At start of production, Suburban will be equipped with an efficient 5.3L V-8 with fuel-saving Active Fuel Management(TM) technology, delivering 320 horsepower (238 kW) and 470 Nm of torque. Later, a new 6.0L V-8 with variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management will be available. Some versions of the 5.3L V-8 are capable of running on any combination of conventional gasoline and ethanol (E85); in fact, GM is an industry leader in the development and sales of E85-capable vehicles. The Chevrolet Suburban is accompanied at the LA Auto Show by its sister model, the GMC Yukon XL. The newly designed 2007 Chevrolet Aveo that had its European premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2005 represents the North American debut of Chevy's global face, and is part of Chevy's strategy to grow sales across the globe. The redesign of the leading entry-level car in the US strengthens Chevy's position in one of the world's most popular automobile segments just as Americans are increasingly discovering the virtues of small cars like the Aveo sedan. Saab The 2.3-liter turbocharged Saab 9-5 Aero BioPower Concept is powered by bio-ethanol (E85), a renewable and sustainable fuel. The concept delivers almost 20 per cent more maximum power (310 hp vs. 260 hp) and 25 per cent more torque (440 Nm vs. 350 Nm) than its gasoline equivalent. This is in addition to a dramatic improvement in environmental performance, through reduced emissions of fossil carbon dioxide (CO2). The BioPower concept arrives in L.A. fresh from being honoured with Popular Science magazine's Best of What's New award, an annual ranking of 100 breakthrough products and technologies that represent a significant leap in their categories. Saab leads the European premium vehicle segment in offering an ethanol-fuelled vehicle. The Saab 9-5 2.0t BioPower, now on sale in Sweden, combines the benefits of environmentally friendly technology with sporty performance, offering more horsepower than its gasoline equivalent, and the ability to run on ethanol-based fuel or gasoline in any proportion. Saab USA plans to eventually debut BioPower models in its 9-3 Sport Sedan, SportCombi and convertible ranges. Design Los Angeles Now in its second year, the Design Los Angeles conference and its accompanying Design Challenge are evolving into an integral element of the L.A. Auto Show. This year's competition theme is "An L.A. Adventure," and GM's 5350 Industrial Concepts team met the challenge head-on by tackling one of the biggest adventures L.A. residents face: affordable housing. GM's entry, the GMC PAD, is a futuristic-looking, diesel-electric powered urban loft with mobility, a creature comfort-filled concept for living in the ever-changing cultural landscape of Southern California or a modern alternative for those financially locked out of Southern California's escalating housing market. It's a home ownership concept that enables cultural and geographic freedom for the modern city dweller and provides a new answer to the problem of urban sprawl.
